Vick Sought Mercy From Judge in Letter
RICHMOND, Va. -- Michael Vick declared "I am not the bad person or beast I've been made out to be" and asked for leniency in a letter to the federal judge who sentenced him to 23 months in prison for a dogfighting conspiracy. Vick made his handwritten plea from jail as he awaited Monday's sentencing by Judge Henry E. Hudson. His five-page letter and several others from Vick supporters, including baseball great Hank Aaron and former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman, were released by the U.S. District Court in Richmond on Thursday. .
Vintage waltz workshop draws scores to Tivoli
As a young man in the 1980s, Richard Powers tried folk dance, ballroom dance, tai chi and vintage dance. Twenty-five years later he remains in the embrace of his favorite: vintage dance. Mr. Powers, a history buff now teaching dance at Stanford University, is one of the world's foremost experts in American social dance. He choreographed dances reconstructed from old manuals, lithographs and woodcuts around the globe. "Historical dance combines the best of everything: dance, history and my favorite music," Mr. Powers said. Last weekend, he taught his 15th historical dance workshop in the Chattanooga area, a vintage waltz workshop sponsored by Split Tree Farms of Chickamauga, Ga., held at the Tivoli Theatre. The workshop drew 103 people from across the country.

In a meeting with editors and reporters of The Greenville News, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce officials outlined their eight-point "2008 Competitiveness Agenda" that they said is necessary for the state to develop a skilled, educated work force that can have economic security, increased productivity and higher per-capita income. "We hear all the time about the global economy this and global economy that," said Jim Micali, chairman and president of Greenville-based Michelin North America. "It's really true. It's very accurate that we in South Carolina are competing today on a global basis, whereas 10,15 years ago you might have said, 'Gee, all I've got to do is do a little bit better than Georgia or North Carolina.' " "Today, we know in the Upstate that the BMWs, the Michelins and the like -- they compete globally.
