Congressional candidates have raised a combined $1.4 billion during this election cycle -- a 30 percent increase over two years ago, according to filings compiled by the Federal Election Commission.

Senate candidates in the 33 contests raised $457.4 million and spent $401.5 million through Oct. 18, the end of the last federal reporting period. House candidates raised more than $678 million and spent $546 million.

Numbers crunchers at the FEC found the biggest jump in fundraising involved races in which a Republican incumbent is up against a Democratic challenger, and in open seat contests with no incumbent on the ballot.

That shouldn't be surprising, given the strong possibility the GOP could lose control of the House, Senate, or both chambers of Congress in Tuesday's midterm elections, if polls are to be believed.

Mix: Time, Radiohead, NBC, HMV

Time Magazine has named the iPhone the top gadget of the year in its list of Top 10 Gadgets. Time says the handset "changed the way we think about how mobile media devices should look, feel and perform." It describes the design as "exceptional," while praising the device's touch screen and myriad of features.

According to a Billboard.biz report, British group Radiohead is in talks with Apple over the release of its latest album, "In Rainbows," on the iTunes Store. Radiohead's EMI back catalog remains a glaring omission from the Store, with the group insisting that its albums be sold in their entirety. Previously, Radiohead, no longer under contract with any label, released "In Rainbows" independently through its own website, on a "pay what you like" basis.

Following the removal of its TV programming from the iTunes Store, NBC has announced a partnership with SanDisk to offer NBC television shows on Fanfare, a web-based service that enables users to download TV shows and other video content for playback on the company's Sansa TakeTV video player.

In Control with Gencontrol ONLINE ONLY

At my last company, I used Gencontrol pretty extensively for remotely monitoring and troubleshooting user desktops. At my new job, I tried to use Gencontrol and my connections keep timing out. The client systems are Windows XP SP2. Im assuming that the Windows XP firewall is blocking the Gencontrol connection. Is this correct? If so, how can I fix it?

Off-Broadway Shows Buoyed by Stagehand Strike

NEW YORK November 30, 2007, 7:28 a.m. ET · Broadway was back. Crowds lined up for tickets and actors and crews converged on once-darkened theaters as dozens of shows came alive again after a 19-day stagehands strike.

"I'm thrilled! For everyone," Liz Enright said Thursday, walking away with two half-price tickets to "Legally Blonde," one of more than two dozen plays and musicals that were shut down during the strike.

"Broadway is exciting. It's New York. It's alive," Enright said as other fans milled around the TKTS discount ticket booth near Times Square, which also reopened Thursday.

She summed up the elation that filled Broadway after stagehands and theater producers reached a tentative agreement late Wednesday, ending a strike that officials estimate cost the city $2 million a day.

What if the 'Surge' Works?

Should Bush's surge happen to succeed, angry voters aren't very likely to run around punishing politicians who voiced doubts (especially since most voters harbored those same doubts). Voters just won't be riled up the way they'll be if the surge fails. They'll base their vote on other issues (e.g., health care, taxes). Isn't the rational course for a self-protective Senator, then, to err on the side of pessimism and vote as if the surge had a lower chance of success than you actually think it does (or than you would think it does if you actually analyzed it fully)? ...

**--Update: Anti-surgers could always "huff, snort, nit-pick" about the inevitable "messy details," suggests Victor Davis Hanson--though I imagine that would be easier for previously antiwar Dems than previously prowar GOPs.
