US elections 2004

For supporters of John Kerry, who have seen allegations about the Democratic candidate's military record sap his campaign, it must have seemed like a case of just deserts.

The president, George Bush, was last week looking vulnerable on the same grounds after CBS's flagship current affairs show, 60 Minutes, broadcast a report claiming he had been suspended from pilot duties for failing to meet the required standards. It was also claimed that a commanding officer had been put under pressure to "sugar coat" Mr Bush's performance reviews.

But while CBS stands by its story, allegations have now surfaced that 60 Minutes based a large part of the report on forged documents.

Although what one man - even a presidential candidate - did more than 30 years ago can seem rather trivial, the US election is being fought between a self-declared "war president" and a man who, in stump speeches, claims he would defend his country as president in the way he had defended it as a young man.

Shayne Ward Tells Bullies to CUT-it-out

Shayne Ward today launched the CUT-it-out campaign, an exciting new initiative from Vodafone and the UK's leading bullying prevention charity, Beatbullying. CUT-it-out, which aims to reduce mobile phone bullying amongst 13-17 year-olds, will offer young hopefuls the chance to script, direct and produce a short film about the long-term effects of bullying. One talented youngster will then have their film screened in UK cinemas throughout the beginning of 2008.

The campaign invites entrants from across the UK to visit http://www.bullyingCUTitout.com/, download a storyboard template and use it to detail their creative ideas for a short film which will reduce the incidence of bullying. Three finalists will then be chosen to travel to London for a weekend to work with top directors and producers to make their films come to life on-set and, of course, to meet the gorgeous Shayne Ward.

Cook's Books: Bevy of books for the home chef

Just in time for holiday gift-giving, here's a look at some of our favorites:

"Artichoke to Za'atar." Originally published in Australia by authors Greg Malouf and Lucy Malouf, this updated, ingredient-driven cookbook presents the bounty of the Middle East.

Each small chapter is divided by the main ingredient, from (of course) artichoke to za'atar, and everything in between, like less common orange-blossom water or quince. A handful of recipes accompany each chapter, and many incorporate several ingredients, like the Southern fried chicken with Eastern spice.

Thorough introductions at the beginning of each section make this a solid reference book for anyone interested in exploring the foods of the region.

"Artichoke to Za'atar," by Greg Malouf and Lucy Malouf (University of California Press, 336 pages, $29.95, due out in February 2008).

Online Video Finds Local Search

If you're starting from scratch, the entry-level solution is to develop a video from digital still images of your business and/or products. Production companies can often use techniques such as pan, zoom, and dissolve, to create the illusion of movement from your digital photos. With the addition of a voice-over to the mix, you can create a low-cost, professional quality video (example).

The next level solution: a custom created video. A production company comes to your location, works with you to create a script, and shoots a custom video on site or in a professional production studio.

There are many production options available to local businesses. Search for "online video production" in your area and review the available local resources. Review a number of projects the candidates have produced.
