East Elementary School to get new, energy-efficient view with upgrade
Rhodes has supported energy-saving efforts for some time. He said he thinks there will be such a savings seen at the upgraded school that officials will want to upgrade the other schools, too.He said the high school, which is located near the Oktoc community, is in better shape and "is a bigger package" than the elementary school, with a gymnasium, newly renovated cafeteria and more space. However, "Would the city want it?" he asked when the discussion turned to potential consolidation of the county and city school districts. .
'Jena 6' Teen Pleads Guilty to Battery
JENA, La. — A black teenager whose prosecution in the beating of a white classmate led to one of the largest civil rights protests in years pleaded guilty to a battery charge. Mychal Bell, 17, originally was charged as an adult with attempted murder in the beating of Justin Barker in December 2006. That charge was reduced before a jury convicted him in June of aggravated second-degree battery. An appeals court threw that verdict out in September and ordered Bell retried as a juvenile. Under his deal, Bell pleaded guilty Monday to a juvenile charge of second-degree battery in return for an 18-month sentence, with credit for 10 months he already has served. Bell had faced being placed in a juvenile facility until his 21st birthday. Although he has about eight months left to serve for the beating of Barker, Bell is currently serving a separate 18-month sentence for previous unrelated juvenile charges.
Lawmakers urge Pentagon to weigh alternatives to furloughs
Defense employees work hard every day to keep America safe and provide critical support to our soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world," Hoyer said. "President Bush should stop using these dedicated and valued workers as political pawns in an attempt to get Congress to write a blank check for Iraq." Hoyer was joined at a news conference by Reps. Tom Davis, R-Va.; Jim Moran, D-Va.; John Sarbanes, D-Md.; and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C. The Pentagon has said money for Army operations will run out in mid-February and for the Marine Corps in March, even after a transfer of $4.1 billion from other accounts to sustain Army operations. On Nov. 15, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced plans to cease operations at Army bases by mid-February, which would result in furloughs of 100,000 civilians and another 100,000 contract personnel.
RIM slashes price of BlackBerry server for SMB market
The new BlackBerry Professional software will replace the company's previous offering for this market, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server SMB Edition. For existing customers of the SMB Edition, RIM is offering a free upgrade. RIM hopes to exploit both its brand name recognition and what it says is strong demand in the SMB market for secure, affordable wireless e-mail, a demand frustrated by a lack of well-known offerings. Microsoft has its own push-e-mail offering as part of Exchange server for Microsoft-based handhelds, but doesn't have a dedicated SMB product. That's just one factor that drives ongoing speculation that Microsoft might be interested in buying RIM. Motorola earlier this year finalized its purchase of mobile e-mail vendor Good Technology, which is now, with the Symbol Technologies acquisition, a key part of Motorola's Enterprise Mobility Solutions division.
