Dec 28th

Well, it's almost time for me to head off to Australia. Tomorrow, actually, but this might be my last chance to get in a blog before then. I will try to blog while there but won't promise. Christmas is over and it was quite a pleasant one. My son visited from Las Vegas and he said he had a good time. It looks like he is set on going back to college full time to qualify as an accountant. He did one class last semester and got an A, so it looks like he should do OK in that field. He has quite a bit of money coming to him for education from the time he spent in the United States Air Force; at least enough for about two years of college. We spent Christmas Eve morning at my wife's parents then headed to Pensacola Beach, Florida to where my wife's sister and family live. Lots of gifts were handed around and we all ate and drank too much.

Windows Live OneCare No Longer the Laughingstock of the Security ...

Back in the first quarter of 2007, following the release of Windows Live OneCare 1.5 which accompanied Windows Vista to the market, Microsoft's antivirus managed to drastically underperform in a test put together by AV-Comparatives. At that time, OneCare came dead last in all the tests run by AV-Comparatives, receiving no certification from the Austrian antivirus lab. But, Microsoft has been hammering away at OneCare taking it to version 1.6 and then to 2.0, and .

Wild Card -- Weekend

He became Santa Claus when donning the suit at shopping malls, church and community Christmas parties and for several years on Christmas Eve when we'd surprise the winner of the newspaper's Letters to Santa contest with a personal visit.

Winter of Our Discontent

2) We cannot (and should not) police the world.

3) National Defense has been captured and used as a welfare program for people who don't need the money.

4) Government should protect the public from crooks, shysters, con-men, hucksters etc, and should not be run by crooks, shysters, con-men, hucksters, etc.

5) Close foreign bases (see #2 and #3)

6) Change the labor laws to protect working people and encourage the right to organize.

7) Government officials and Corporate Officers are Not above the law and should do hard time if convicted of crimes.

There are too many people in prison for drug related offenses. End the WAR on DRUGS.

9) Get the government out of our private lives and quit it listening to our phonecalls and reading our (e-)mail.

Sibling Rivalry: Biggest Turkey Wins

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - A Minnesota man basted a 72-pound turkey to trounce his sister in their annual sibling rivalry over who can prepare the biggest Thanksgiving bird.

Rich Portnoy roasted his tubby turkey in his 36-inch-wide, chef-caliber oven on Thursday to top the biggest bird his sister had ever cooked by 25 pounds. Andra Portnoy conceded defeat from her Reston, Va., home, but noted that her brother's large oven gave him an edge.

"It actually tastes pretty good!" Rich Portnoy said, gloating a bit after he and two other men pulled the turkey from the oven after 15 hours of roasting.

Big turkeys are a tradition in the Portnoy family. Rich Portnoy said his father cooked birds of 30 pounds or more years ago.

Last year, Andra Portnoy cooked a 47-pounder to take the lead after her brother could only find a 37-pounder, even though he lives in the nation's top turkey-producing state.
