GHSA sets big, widespread regions

The Georgia High School Association's region alignments for the next reclassification period were announced Thursday, and officials at northwest Georgia schools were, for the most part, surprised and not very pleased.

Three of the four regions including northwestern Georgia will be subdivided beginning with the 2008-09 school year, something area schools were hoping to avoid. In the case of Region 6-AAA -- which will include Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Ringgold, the new Heritage High, LaFayette, Ridgeland and Southeast Whitfield -- the news that those schools would be grouped with Carrollton-area schools was not well received.

"That was the worst-case scenario for us," LFO principal Jerry Ransom said. "From the indications we were given and the discussions we've had, we didn't think it was going to happen this way.

CAPABLE CROSSOVER: This Rogue is not so tough

But the programmed pause points feel right, even when you keep your mitts off the paddles and let Nissan's adaptive logic control take the helm. While the engine doesn't come close to offering "License to Kill" kind of power, the lightweight Rogue tips the scales at a svelte 3,460-pounds for an all-wheel-drive model.

By comparison, the 2008 Saturn Vue, which is slightly bigger than the Rogue, weighs nearly 1,000 pounds more.

Keeping that weight off allows the Rogue to reach 27 miles per gallon on the highway with a front-wheel drive only model and 22 mpg in city driving.

While pushing the Rogue through the paces around Detroit, I found it quite capable. Its acceleration was quick and it hugged corners. There was some body roll through turns, but the Rogue felt surefooted, thanks to its all-wheel drive system with yaw control and standard vehicle dynamic control and traction control.

Fragility = Power for Pelosi:

Nancy Knows: Think Democratic congresspersons who voted for Hoyer over Murtha were protected from the wrath of Pelosi because the election was conducted by secret ballot? Not exactly. Dena Bunis of the O.C. Register reports:

Going into the election, Pelosi and her lieutenants believed the vote would be close. Pelosi was making phone calls late into Wednesday night trying to persuade members to vote for Murtha.

But the ballot was a secret one. So members who supported Hoyer but didn't want to anger Pelosi just told her what she wanted to hear.

Inside the room where the election was being held, there were boxes for members to drop their secret ballots. Pelosi and her crew watched as people voted. Some members actually brought fellow lawmakers with them when they marked their ballots so they could prove to Pelosi that they did vote for Murtha.

Scribes is a smart editor

EVERYONE HAS his/her favourite Editor [And here at the INQ who is him? -Ed]. But every once in a while you come across one that is "just right". Ironically, I have discovered one that outpaces every other I have known.

Editors are very personal, subjective choices. You either hate them or love them. I hated my previous editor on Windows, and in several instances I lost lots of drafts because of editors hanging on me [You're fired -Ed]. No, I don't mean Human editors, I mean, software, you know, the little programs where you type stuff. [Sorry, you're fired -Ed]. For the sake of this analysis I'm leaving out of the picture what I call ""unfriendly editors designed by Aliens" - like "vi" or Emacs, for instance. Although I'm sure geek god Stallman will disagree.

This is what Scribes looks like.

The Great Showdown: MS Office vs. OpenOffice

"OpenOffice works on Linux, Windows and Mac. It also supports a wider range of languages for its interface, and it's free software so you can adapt it to your needs or easily write add-ons," Matas Bellone, analyst at Kayote Networks in Argentina, told LinuxInsider. "I have to admit though, that its interface is still sub-par. The menus are there, and it's as easy to use as MS Office's; it's just not pretty."

Ice storm slips us into winter weather: Road, power crews prepare for ...

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain could cause travel difficulties. Motorists should be cautious on bridges or overpasses.

AccuWeather.com meteorologist Shawn Smith also said that a second storm expected to hit the area Saturday afternoon and last through Sunday could bring significant snowfall. Smith said much of the snowfall amounts will be determined by how the storm tracks. Should it track in more to the west, it could bring more rain than snow.

"The track is definitely very important in terms of snowfall," Smith said.

Doug Tosten, manager for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in Franklin County, said road crews could be on staff as soon as midnight .
