Protesters briefly halt demolition of New Orleans public housing; 2 ...
Harvey Johnson, FEMA's deputy administrator, disclosed the agency's latest plans for the tests during a hearing Wednesday in Washington before the Senate Homeland Security Committee. Senators pressed Johnson to explain the delays in testing 500 occupied trailers in Mississippi and Louisiana, where tens of thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. "It's taken a long time in part because we have not had this problem before," Johnson said. "This is the first time we've had people be in travel trailers for this length of time — up to two years — in which case some of these symptoms and the impacts on health have become more apparent." Officials from FEMA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were expected to outline the new testing plans Thursday at news conferences in New Orleans and Washington.
Vera Wang's Big Bang
Target's hits with limited-edition collections from world-renowned designers continues when a collection by London designer Alice Temperly launches Sept. 16. H&M, which created sensations with limited-edition collections by fashion giants Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Viktor & Rolf, will roll out a collaboration with Roberto Cavalli in November. The Italian designer, whose couture pieces are worn by Madonna, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow, will create a colorful collection of menswear, women's wear, lingerie and accessories for H&M. Also launching in November is a shoe collection by Patricia Field for Payless. Field, the trend-setting stylist for "Sex and the City,'' was nominated for an Oscar last year for costume design for "The Devil Wears Prada.'' While designer collections for Target and H&M are one-offs, Wang's association with Kohl's is a long-term agreement.
Marines collects toys, prepares to deploy
Even as they prepare for deployment to the Middle East, Marines of the Chattanooga-based "Mike Battery" continue to collect donations for the 60th annual Toys for Tots campaign. As part of local efforts to assure needy children receive Christmas presents, the Chattanooga Market on Sunday hosted its annual Stone Soup Cook-Off to benefit the Marine Corps toy drive. "It has an immense effect when Marines stand beside the collection boxes," said 2nd Lt. Joshua Mills, who estimated donations "increase by at least 200 percent" when a uniformed Marine Reservist is present. All donations to the Chattanooga-based Battery M 3/14 U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign will be distributed in a 20-county area of Southeast Tennessee, Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama, he said.
