Horse park glows in dark

If looking at holiday lights has long been a favorite activity of the season, you may want to round up the family and head for the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

You'll see much more than Santa, Frosty and the usual players that give dazzling performances in many merry displays this time of year. Much more.

Obama's Joy?

Good to see Ann Coulter defending the Black Panthers. ... 6:50 P.M.

Sen. Tim Johnson is still under sedation, and AP's report contains this alarming quote (missing from the version now posted on WaPo):

Dr. Keith Siller, director of the Comprehensive Stroke Care Center at NYU Medical Center and assistant professor at the NYU School of Medicine, said it is unusual for a patient to be sedated after brain surgery for more than a few days.

Short form: just like earlier additions Dollar General and the West End Plaza, Alco, a multi-state corporation with 256 stores and $433 million dollars in annual sales, gets to pay less taxes on its new property than if a regular Flandreaunian just up and started a business there and didn't ask the government for a favor. Oh well. At least Flandreau has someone to compete with Dollar General. It's just too bad that none of these corporations seem to be able to compete without handouts from the government. .

Challenges, not challengers, for Consolidated 4 trustees

While incumbents for seats on Orangeburg Consolidated School District 4's Board of Trustees do not face any challengers in Tuesday's election, they acknowledge facing many challenges in the coming years of service.Paul Bidwell, Mary Brant and board Vice Chairwoman Peggy Tyler say the district will have to tackle pressing issues such as school financing and mandates from the federal and state levels."I don't think it's one thing, it is a culmination of things," said trustee Mary Brant, who holds Seat 6, about what the district needs to accomplish in the near future.Seat 2 board member Tyler sees federal and state mandates on standards as one challenge. "They demand so much of us with the standards so set so high, it's hard to reach them," she said. With the property tax relief law, Act 388, capping the millage rates that local governments and school boards can set, the future of school financing is not clear, Bidwell said."We don't understand what Act 388 will do.
