Cholesterol levels attain milestone

As U.S. adults met doctor-recommended cholesterol levels for the first time in more than four decades, access to a cholesterol-fighting drug that helped them reach their goal might get easier, but not necessarily cheaper.

On Thursday, New Jersey-based drug giant Merck & Co. for a third time will seek approval from a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel to sell its cholesterol-lowering drug Mevacor over the counter. The panel has rejected the two previous requests, and though the FDA isn't bound to follow the panel's recommendation, it usually does.

Approval would allow consumers to purchase Mevacor without prescription. Mevacor, also known under the generic name lovastatin, was the first statin approved by the FDA 20 years ago.

Lunch with the FT: Andrew Dilnot

As I enter the porter's lodge at St Hugh's College, Oxford, I fleetingly reflect that I may be about to receive an intimidating tutorial from the college principal, Andrew Dilnot. It is not that the economist has a stern reputation, but today's circumstances are unusual. He recently stepped down from presenting More or Less, a BBC Radio 4 series about numbers in the news. I have been recruited as the new presenter, and am ready to be patronised – or worse.

I needn't have worried: as he strides into the lodge in a pale brown linen suit and blue tie, Dilnot's smile is genuine enough, and as we walk together through north Oxford's leafy residential streets, he is more eager to identify shared acquaintances in the world of economics than to lecture me on the art of radio presenting.

IFC Helps Bring Reliable and Affordable Electricity to Mindanao by ...

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is playing a major role in helping the private sector bring electricity to small villages in the southern Philippines. IFC is supporting the governments drive to attract private capital and providing advisory services to electric cooperatives in Mindanao.

IFCs strategy includes support for power sector reform in the Philippines through private sector participation that promotes competition. We hope to attract private sector interest, particularly in Mindanao, where development assistance is needed most, said Jesse Ang, IFC Acting Country Manager for the Philippines and Thailand.

Mindanao is home to six of the countrys 10 poorest regions and has the Philippines highest incidence of poverty, at 46 percent.

Hope Now: Sorry, wrong number

It's the third group, the ones who can handle the teaser rates but won't be able to do so with the higher rates, that Hope Now says it will help. The help to be proffered involves a freeze of up to five years on the higher interest rate reset. It is hoped that by then the subprime borrower will have accrued at least some measure of equity in his house, or have maybe saved or prepared in some way for the higher payments. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson described the need for policy action in this way: I want to help as many able homeowners as possible. To do that requires continuous learning. We must deepen our understanding of how many borrowers can be helped and the most effective mortgage solutions for them. As I have said before, this housing and mortgage market decline is still unfolding.
